How to use the power of mindset when you are feeling burnout

Do you feel mental, emotional or physical exhaustion on a daily basis?

Do you dread going to work?

Have you reduced professional efficacy?

Or perhaps you got increased feelings of negativism or cynicism related to work?

Burnout is not merely an emotional response to challenging or long hours of work.

‘Researches demonstrate that it is a condition that leaves mark on the brain and the body.’

Especially if you are a driven professional and want to be successful, burnout is definitely something you should watch out for:

Here are some ways working on your Mindset to help you prevent the risk of burnout:

1. Find the causes of feeling burnout:

What is making you stressed or overwhelmed right now?

How could you change it?

Remember what made you choose the job you are doing? What has changed since then?

If you could change one thing, what would that be?

That will tilt you in the direction of your values. Knowing what is important for you is key to be fulfilled and motivated about what you do instead of the habitual burnout.

2. Invite gratitude in:

Practicing gratitude is a habit that can be built. But not a lot of us practice it. Our brains are not yet wired to look for the positive. But we can train them day by day.

To start, think about the positive things you already have in your life and work. Reconnect with them.

3. Release what doesn’t serve you:

Ask yourself, what is in your control?

You have to be very honest with yourself. If specific circumstances brought you to the position where you are now, which of those have changed?

  • Make a list of all the things that are on your plate.
  • Put aside the ones that you don’t have control over, and let them go.
  • Then focus on the ones that are in your hands, or the ones you can influence.

It could be about delegating, talking to your boss, reconsidering what fulfills you or how you can calibrate the time or energy you put into certain things. Sometimes it is only a conversation away.

4. Trust your nature:

When we are under continued stress, our body reacts with a “Flight or fight” response. As a result we see our problem-solving skills decrease.

For this reason leaning back to our biological nature is key.

Trust your body. Trust our natural abilities and know that we have strength and skills to overcome any situation. Rely on what you know works and give it to yourself.

5. Fuel your body:

Body and mind are connected, so whatever you work out on each will feed the other one. When your emotions are overwhelming you, moving your body is the best way to release them -although a warm bath may also be a good option right now-.

Do the activity that gives you what you need, and ensure you also consume the necessary vitamins and nutrients your body needs. These will allow your cells to do what they are designed to do.

A positive mindset is nourished by the benefits of all the above.

The above are outlined suggestions that will help you shift towards the right attitude to support yourself in overcoming your current situation.
