The myth of Selfcare day: and why it will never work for you
Most people nowadays talk and post about Self care day, but that doesn’t actually work.
It may make you think that “a day will do the trick”.
It may also remind you that we are so busy that ‘we don’t have time’ for a more consistent Self care routine.
Or worse, that we don’t find Self care important enough to make it part of our daily life.
…. Which one of those are you?
It is true that one day is better than nothing. And usually taking the first step is the hardest, so we are not gonna blame those who do…
But the reality is that we should include Selfcare within our lives. It HAS to be part of our routine.
Here some things that you don’t know are holding you from incorporating Selfcare WITHIN your days:
1. Is practising Self care every day aligned with you values?
Question yourself if you see the value of putting time on it daily.
- What thoughts and feelings come up?
- If you understand its importance, what is getting on the way of you doing it?
It’s ok to feel confused or overwhelmed. Sit with it, it will only give you information about where the clash comes from and what are your fears. They can be worked on, they are only your thoughts…
2. Dig a bit more… What makes you feel that way about taking time for your Self care?
It may be that you don’t feel you deserve it, that you don’t have the time.
Or you have a strong sense of productivity or perfectionism – I’ll talk about this later on, keep!-.
- Note those down to work on them separately.
All of these are beliefs we hold that don’t allow us to do what we would like to do. In other words – excuses!
If you get stuck here, the work to do is deep, so hit me up! I can help you on that.
3. Choose your Self care activity:
This should be the most fun part, feel what you need. Pick what you love.
It also helps having different options for different lengths of time.
When the assigned or free moment of the day comes, you will allow less margin for hesitation.
4. Build motivation:
Make a list of benefits and take some time to visualise how it would improve your life qualitatively.
- Ask yourself: How will it make you feel? Write this down as a reminder.
5. Schedule it:
One of the simplest ways to succeed when planning an activity is that, planning it!
Find when it works best for you and arrange the time you have for the chosen activity depending on availability.
It doesn’t mean that you can’t change the activity at all. Listening to your needs is the right thing to do. But when you are building the habit it might be safer to have a clear action when it gets the time.
Set a reminder. Make it a date.
6. Don’t hit yourself up if you don’t make it!
Overall, being kind to ourselves might sound against it but it’s the first step to aim for 😉
Reviewing your time or thoughts again, and rescheduling would be a great thing to do.
